“Strange Fruit: A Tribute to Billie Holiday”
Laurean D. Robinson, MA
Philadelphia heart bears strange fruit
Bruises on its skin and addiction at its leaves
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange Fruit hanging from the magnolia trees
Glamorous scene of the spotlit stardom
The punctured flesh and the dark-circled eyes
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh
Here is fruit that the heart can’t protect
For the rain to drown, for the wind to defect
For the sun to patch, for the trees to ignore
Here is strange and bittersweet to its core
