Big Eyes

Screen Goblin

Tim Burton’s new movie Big Eyes comes with a twist – it doesn’t feature a dead thing, a gnarly tree or Johnny Depp. That happens to be the only twist, and the true story plays out exactly as spelled out in the trailer. Margaret Keane (Amy Adams), the artist known for her horrible paintings of saucer-eyed children, marries a fraudster named Walter (Christoph Waltz), who takes credit for every single creepy painting.

Apparently these paintings were hugely popular in the 1950s, but god knows why. To quote Jason Schwartzman’s character: “Who would want credit?” The pictures are tacky, gaudy and empty – and so is this film. Perhaps Burton sympathises with a woman ridiculed for churning out the same stylised tripe again and again, and it’s not surprising to learn that he owns a collection of Keane’s work – the man clearly has no taste, as evidenced by his friendship with David Cameron.

Feeding The Homeless: Act Of Charity Or A Crime?

CBS Miami

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) — For a 90-year old South Florida man, feeding the homeless in a public park is an act of charity but in Fort Lauderdale it’s a crime.

Arnold Abbot and two South Florida ministers were arrested last weekend as they handed out food. They were charged with breaking a new ordinance restricting public feeding of the homeless, and each faces up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

“One of the police officers said, ‘Drop that plate right now,’ as if I were carrying a weapon,” Abbott said.

The conflict pits organizations with charitable intentions against residents and businesses who don’t want their neighborhoods to become magnets for the homeless.

Fort Lauderdale is the latest U.S. city to pass restrictions on feeding homeless people in public places. Advocates for the homeless said the cities are fighting to control increasing homeless…

Sandoval’s Homer Helps Giants Beat Marlins 9-1

CBS Miami

MIAMI (AP) — Pablo Sandoval hit a three-run homer off one of his favorite foils, and the San Francisco Giants beat the slumping Miami Marlins 9-1 Friday night.

All-Star Madison Bumgarner (11-7) allowed one run in six innings.

The Marlins lost their fifth game in a row, while San Francisco emerged from the All-Star break looking determined to end a prolonged scoring slump.

The Giants began the night averaging less than three runs per game in July, worst in the majors, but they’ve totaled 17 runs in their past two games.

Sandoval’s 12th homer ended Nathan Eovaldi’s night in the Giants’ five-run fifth. Sandoval improved to 8 for 11 lifetime against Eovaldi with nine RBIs.

Brandon Crawford hit the 11th pitch he saw for a two-run homer in the second inning. Buster Posey and Michael Morse each had three of San Francisco’s 13 hits.
